Adaptive device, or assistive technology, provide valuable support for people with disabilities to navigate everyday tasks. Family or caregivers for people with disabilities also greatly benefit from assistive technology, as it may enable better communication with the person they are caring for and ease caregiving activities in addition to supporting greater autonomy for the person with disabilities.
Unfortunately, people with disabilities and their caregivers often lack sufficient knowledge about assistive technologies, how to acquire them, and how to implement them in their daily lives.
Open Doors for Multicultural Families, in partnership with PROVAIL presents videos All about Assistive Technology, Part 1 and All about Assistive Technology, Part 2. The videos are intended for families of children with disabilities, including senior caregivers of adult children with disabilities to provide an overview on such topics as the various types of assistive technology, including communication, switches, and environmental controls. Part 1 covers different types of assistive technologies; Part 2 focuses on alternative and augmentative communication, accessible apps and IPads, adapted computer input, and different types of switches.
